Let The People Vote

Rather than calling for demonstrations, and since Lebanon is split about half half on most issues, why not ask the people to vote like the EU citizens are voting on their new constitution?

Each citizen will vote by either Yes or No (or abstain) to each question below:

1) Elect a new president?
2) Change the government?
3) Elect a new parliament?
4) Disarm Hezbollah?
5) Re-arm the Sunnis and Christians?
6) Accept the UN proposal for the international tribunal as is without any changes?

If the opposition refuses this voting and proceeds with demonstrations, then the current majority is entitled for its own version of demonstrations: disarm Hezbollah.

But Happy Arab mentioned that if the opposition rejects the referendum, that weakens its logic of staying in the street.

But according to the opposition the current government is not legitimate. Therefore they will reject anything that comes from within this govt.using the exuse that it doesn't represent all lebanese...they will keep demonstating to bring down the Siniora's govt. Keep in mind they believe in divine victories ;)
Not bringing down the govt. is a big loss for a hezbollah that's not used to never achieve its goals, that is how they gained popularity in the past and that is their only way to maintain it.
With all due respect to what happy arab had mentioned which i strongly agree with but there is the reality on the lebanese ground -You simply cannot reason with a militia unless u use the same tactics they use- we can't talk about an election with someone who owns 20,000+ missiles, over 500,000 uneducated human and extreme religious beliefs that are fed to the new generations on a daily basis. If you have a MOTHER that delivers babies and raise them to be killed , you know you have a society in deep trouble.Everything else looses its meaning when a female doesn't understand the true meaning of motherhood.
If those people believe in democracy they would never kill their own children in the name of war.
If those people know any better, we wouldn't have as many conflicts in today's world.

I tend to disagree with you raghda.
Your points don't explain why the (supposedly) educated Christians, people who are not raised to kill, are following blindly Michel Aoun. The problem is not fundamentally in the people. They are led like sheep by this or that leader.

What Aoun is suffering from is the thirst to power. Remember he's a military general who had lived in exile for a long time. What that usually does, the person either becomes crazy or becomes an idiot. In Aoun’s case he became both.

On the other hand, whoever is left of his blind supporters are suffering from what I call pride struggle and are at the point of no return.
I personally don’t feel threatned by him or whoever is LEFT of his supporters …in many cases education will kick in sooner or later.

Here is why I believe the problem is in the people…Why did it take a Rafik Hariri to die for us to scream “Syria out!” why did we have to wait for Gebran, Samir, George and Pierre and all the others to be killed in such brutal ways so we can have our democracy back?
Do we have to wait for Jumblatt to be assassinated like his dad or Samir Jaejae to be killed so we can take that short walk to Baabda?

Why do the fed up Syrians -which are a majority- put up with tyrannical gvts. Like the current baa’thist regime…they know how terrible it was when Assad (the father) wiped out Hamma and its people…they know how terrible it is to be forced by Assad Junior to participate in the Damascus’ demonstrations last year and so on…

Can you tell me why do the LEBANESE in Dahiyeh have more loyalty to Iran than Lebanon?
Simply because they’re made to believe everything they hear…they’re hungry, uneducated and passive people and I insist on those three.

Also, to put this topic back on track you can’t have a successful vote with “Yes” or “No” on those six specific and up to the point questions. People who will make the huge difference in votes like this are the Shiite in the current Lebanese dilemma who will most likely vote with "NO" to all six questions except #2. Those people claim a prophet everyday and believe in divine victories.

I’m sorry happy arab but unless u believe in divine votes …your wish as well as mine to have our country back will remain a dream.
You’re a very smart person and you know the problem we are facing in Lebanon is above and beyond politics …it is a religious one by excellence and until we can separate state and church or state and mosque our problems are going to only grow bigger.

Raghda,

My suggestion to vote on the key issues was partly sarcastic. The sarcasm part wasn't clear in the blog, sorry.

Also, the idea is to spread some confusion in the opposition camp. Some of the people in the opposition may like the idea of voting. Others won't.

On another hand, remember who the German people followed in the 1930s. We're talking some of the most educated and advanced people in the world.

I have great confidence in the Shiia. I believe they are very capable and hospitable people. They just need to stop following leaders and religion and start thinking freely.

I stumbled upon this site: Raghda seems to think like Ba`this used to: the people are afflicted by ignorance, poverty and disease `aflaq used to say, therefore, they have no agency and cannot be trusted to have opinions of their own. They are like 'sheep', as she and happy Arab said. Right after that, she makes an argument for 'democracy'. Is she aware of how undemocratic her argument is? (aside from being prejudiced, wrong and seriously revolting?). Then she peppers her argument with another piece of wisdom about Shi`a mothers 'raising their sons to be killed'. Do you have any idea how offensive and de-humanizing this saying is? have you ever met a shi`a mother who wanted her children to be dead? can you imagine being a mother and hearing such an accusation? the only time I heard such a language was from American racist zionist trying to argue how Palestinians are not 'human' like us...
And after you make such comments about your compatriots, you dare speak of "lebanese identity"????
